Microdermabrasion Overview

Microdermabrasion is a treatment that can rejuvenate almost any part of your body. Areas that can receive the most benefits include:

  • Face
  • Chest
  • Hands
  • Back
  • Elbows

This is a gentler, less invasive procedure than most chemical peels and laser treatments, and the results are generally not as dramatic. It is perfect for patients looking for a subtle but noticeable enhancement in the quality and tone of their skin.

If you are looking to address a small amount of damage or aging to “freshen up” your appearance, this may be the service for you.

What Can Microdermabrasion Do for Me?

Sun damage affects us all, and most of us do not realize the extent until it is too late. If you are noticing premature signs of aging, sun damage is likely the culprit, in which case Microdermabrasion is likely the treatment for you. The possible benefits of Microdermabrasion include:

  • Treatment for acne
  • Smoother, younger-looking skin
  • Scar reduction
  • A decrease in pore size
  • Rosacea treatment
  • Softening of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduction in superficial hyperpigmentation (age spots)

After a microdermabrasion process, you may find it easier for skincare products to penetrate the deeper layers of your skin to help build collagen, giving you a healthy, rejuvenated look.

Is Microdermabrasion Right For Me?

When you visit for a consultation, we will discuss your options and offer valuable information. So you can rest assured you are making an informed, educated choice. We will identify any problem areas that need to be addressed while helping you develop realistic expectations for your treatment outcome.

Your Microdermabrasion can be a simple procedure on its own or used in combination with additional treatments. The number of treatments will vary from patient to patient. For more extensive rejuvenation and restoration, it will likely take multiple treatments. But we’re sure you’ll agree the final results are well worth the wait. It’s no wonder so many patients prefer Microdermabrasion as their go-to skin rejuvenation treatment.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

Microdermabrasion works by exfoliating your skin’s outermost layers of dead skin, revealing the fresh, new you underneath. The process is virtually pain-free, low risk, and there is little-to-downtime. We perform the process in the safe, comfortable atmosphere of our modern, state-of-the-art facilities in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, California. Our procedures have made significant progress in treating aging skin for those who wish to prolong or maintain a youthful appearance.

Dermabrasion: The Process of Rejuvenation

During your procedure, your skin is cleansed and prepped to ensure the smooth passing of the Microdermabrasion Handpiece over the treatment area. You may feel a slight, prickling sensation. It should be relatively painless otherwise. If the feeling is too uncomfortable, the controls can be adjusted.

Microdermabrasion treatment for the face typically takes about thirty minutes, or one hour if the neck and upper chest area are included. You may feel as if you have experienced a slight sunburn for around the same amount of time.

Crystal Microdermabrasion

There is another option known as crystal Microdermabrasion. This process involves the use of a compressor that draws in air through a hand-held wand. When the wand touches the skin, it creates a vacuum. Aluminum oxide crystals are then blasted across the surface of your skin, picking up dead surface cells along the way.

The crystals, and dead skin cells, are then sucked up into a different tube in the same wand for disposal. This is actually considered to be a more comfortable process. Rest assured that Dr. Brent will go over all available options with you before settling on a process that fits your needs and comfort level.

After the Treatment

One of the significant advantages of Microdermabrasion is that it has virtually no downtime. In most cases, you should be able to resume your normal routine immediately.

After receiving a microdermabrasion treatment, it is recommended that you avoid a few activities or products while your skin begins to see the benefits of the treatment.

Avoid:

  • Sun exposure for at least a week
  • Make use of daily sunscreen
  • Avoid skin exfoliants, alpha-hydroxy acid, and glycolic acids for 72 hours before and after treatment
  • Avoid liquid foundation and pressed powder should be avoided for at least 24 hours

Most cases involve anywhere between 4-6 treatments, with 7-10 day intervals between them to allow your skin to heal. The use of medical-grade machines in the treatment, operating at high power, may carry the risk of hyperpigmentation, perforation, bleeding, or infection; however, these are rare.
