What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, breast implants, breast enhancement, and breast enlargement, is designed to surgically enhance or augment your breast size with breast implants.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of women undergo this surgery. Recent research ranks breast augmentation as the number one cosmetic surgery procedure performed in America. It is easy to understand why breast augmentation is so popular because one of the defining characteristics of the human figure is the beauty, femininity, and sensuality of the female breast.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Breast augmentation is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, and the surgery typically takes 1 to 4 hours. Using either local or general anesthesia, you will be medicated during your surgery so you will not experience any discomfort. Incisions are made in as inconspicuous an area as possible, usually the armpit, around the areola (nipple area), or under the breast itself to minimize visible scarring.

During the breast augmentation procedure, Dr. Brent will lift your breast tissue and insert the implant. He will then center it beneath the nipple, either under the breast (submammary) or under the breast and chest muscle (subpectoral). A subglandular placement does not involve the muscles of your chest, as the insertion is beneath the breast tissue only. The fatty tissue within your breast gives your implants a more realistic feel. In the partial subglandular placement, the implant is inserted behind your breast tissue, but the pectoral and chest muscles are involved to a degree.

Once your implants are placed, your incisions are closed using surgical tape, surgical glue, or sutures. From there, you can rest in a recovery room until you are ready to go home. Once ready, you can have your designated driver take you home to start resting.

Am I an ideal candidate for breast augmentation?

Because of the increased safety and effectiveness of cosmetic surgery and the broadening social acceptance of breast augmentation, more people are choosing to have the procedure performed. Breast augmentation may be a good option for you if you:

  • Are in good general health
  • Consider your breasts to be too small or underdeveloped
  • Feel your figure and silhouette are out of proportion due to smaller breasts
  • Feel limited when choosing clothes to accentuate your chest
  • Breasts have lost shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging
  • Lack the confidence to wear more revealing clothing that may highlight your cleavage
  • Have uneven and asymmetrical breasts
  • Currently have breast implants and are experiencing problems or dissatisfaction with them

What is the recovery like after breast augmentation?

Depending on the extent of your surgery, most patients can return to work within a week postoperatively. However, taking at least 1 full week of downtime is essential. Take time off from work and all other activities and instead focus on recovery. You should take any prescribed medications as this will help control the pain, manage your swelling, and avoid undue scarring. Wearing the proper supportive garments will also help you heal, and you may find that sleeping in a reclined position will help any swelling subside more quickly.

Discomfort is at its greatest during the first 48 hours or so after surgery. Still, over-the-counter medication may be enough to help you manage the pain. Soreness and swelling can continue for a few weeks but should continually improve.

FAQs

Women want to create a fuller and larger bust line for many reasons. The most common complaint is dissatisfaction with breast shape and size. During puberty, some people do not develop large amounts of breast tissue and are genetically predisposed to small breasts. Although small breasts are common, women usually prefer volume in breast size. Some patients have large breasts, but they need surgery to add definition and shape after pregnancy and childbirth.

Women can also lose breast mass due to:

  • Aging
  • Significant weight loss
  • Menopause or hormonal changes

Patients may also choose breast augmentation to:

  • Restore symmetry to breast size
  • Reconstruct breasts following mastectomy for breast cancer
The right size implant for your breast augmentation will leave you looking better if it fits your body’s physical proportions. Too small of an implant will not make enough of a difference in your appearance. Likewise, too large an implant might be visible through your skin or look unnatural. Additionally, overlarge implants can cause back pain and limit your athletic abilities. The right implant size will depend on your body shape, type, and size. Additionally, your breast tissue and skin elasticity play a role. Typically, patients can have a 1- to 3-cup size increase with breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation immediately increases your breast size following the procedure. However, it takes about 1 week for enough of the swelling to fade before you can start enjoying your results. After this, swelling should continue to fade, with it mostly gone within a couple of weeks. Residual swelling takes longer, but it is not visible. However, it can still influence how the implants rest, so your final results only appear once all swelling resolves.

Breast augmentation results tend to last up to 15 years. However, this will depend on the type and quality of the implant. Dr. Brent exclusively provides implants manufactured by top brands. Each implant is designed for durability, aesthetics, and patient safety. However, implants are not yet a permanent prosthetic. Once an implant begins to become worn, you will need to replace it with a second procedure.

On average, patients should avoid any strenuous activity for at least 6 weeks after breast augmentation. Some light activity is fine after the first 2 weeks, but avoid lifting anything heavier than 5 pounds for at least 6 weeks. Recovery simply takes time, so we recommend continuing to listen to your body until fully healed. You can resume driving about 1 week after surgery, but only if you are not taking prescription pain medications.

As with any surgery, there are risks. Breast augmentation complications are rare but include scarring, infection, bleeding, loss of sensation, and slow healing. You can minimize your chance for these problems by following the pre- and postsurgical instructions and guidelines provided by Dr. Brent and his professional staff. Additionally, working with the right plastic surgeon will further decrease any risks. You want an experienced and well-qualified surgeon with a track record of patient safety.

The biggest factors patients may worry about include nipple sensitivity and breastfeeding. In some cases, breast augmentation can affect these breast functions. However, it depends on the technique used and the surgeon’s skill. An experienced surgeon will avoid unnecessary nerve damage whenever possible. Dr. Brent will discuss these factors with you when consulting about your procedure. He adapts his recommendations based on the outcomes you want to see.

The consultation is your chance to learn all you need to know about our available procedures. You work with Dr. Brent to build a tailored plan that addresses your goals and brings about the results you want to see. Typically, the consultation involves several key elements:

  • Meeting Dr. Brent and discussing your aesthetic goals
  • Going through your medical history
  • Highlighting key procedures that match your aims
  • Building a procedure plan that adapts to your needs
  • Receiving a personalized quote
  • Scheduling your surgery day (if you are ready)
  • Receiving pre-procedure instructions.

You certainly can combine breast augmentation with other procedures. The most popular combination is with a breast lift, which enhances the position and shape of the breasts. You can also combine augmentation with body procedures, such as a tummy tuck. Many patients include breast augmentation as part of their mommy makeover procedure, which helps women reclaim their pre-baby body.

Any procedure that requires incisions will result in a scar. While breast augmentation does require incisions, Dr. Brent keeps them to a minimum. He also places and creates them strategically, hiding them under the breast whenever possible. Incision size will also vary, depending on your implant type. Saline implants require a smaller incision than silicone and thus also result in smaller scars.

Remember, scars should also fade over time. They may be most noticeable a few weeks after surgery, but then they should improve. The color should become more neutral with time, especially if you follow good aftercare habits. Better healing means better improvements in scars.

The actual procedure should involve zero pain. We typically use general anesthesia for the entire surgery, which means you will be unconscious at every point. Following surgery, your breasts will have some pain. Many patients may manage this sufficiently with over-the-counter pain relievers. In more complex cases, we may prescribe medication to alleviate discomfort.

Breast augmentation in Beverly Hills can vary significantly. With each procedure, the cost fluctuates based on the complexity and other details. For example, silicone implants tend to cost more than saline. On average, the cost of breast augmentation in Beverly Hills can be $10,000 or more. That said, Dr. Brent provides each patient with a commitment-free quote that factors in each element of their procedure. The quoted cost will be all-inclusive, covering the cost of surgery, facility fees, a board-certified anesthesiologist, and follow-up care.

My experience with Dr. Moelleken and his staff was the absolute best possible. Dr. was very interested in his patient as were his staff. Making you comfortable and secure in the knowledge of his skills, which are the best. No problems. No looking “done” just better. Thank you.
