Breast Augmentation Facts

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, breast implants, breast enhancement and breast enlargement, is designed to surgically enhance or augment your breast size with breast implants. Every year, hundreds of thousands of women undergo this surgery and recent research ranks breast augmentation as the number one cosmetic surgery procedure performed in America. It is easy to understand why breast augmentation is so popular because one of the defining characteristics of the human figure is the beauty, femininity, and sensuality of the female breast.

Why Get Breast Augmentation?

Women want to create a fuller and larger bust line for many reasons. The most common complaint is the dissatisfaction with breast shape and size. During puberty, some females do not develop large amounts of breast tissue and they are genetically predisposed to small breasts. Although small breasts are common and able to produce milk, women usually prefer volume in breast size. Some patients have large breasts but they need surgery to add definition and shape after pregnancy and childbirth.

Women lose breast mass as a consequence of aging or when large amounts of weight are lost and when a woman experiences menopause, hormonal changes cause a loss of breast fullness. Women with physical deformities such as uneven or different size breasts, choose breast augmentation as a corrective procedure. Reconstructive breast surgery is necessary after cancer and when one or both breasts are removed, they can be replaced with breast implants to restore breast tissue.

Evaluation & Consultation

Breast augmentation can enhance your appearance and boost self-confidence but it will not necessarily change your looks to match your “ideal” image. Before you decide breast augmentation is right for you, Dr. Moelleken will evaluate your expectations and discuss your individual objectives regarding the changes you seek in the shape and size of your breasts. Appropriate candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking to improve the way they look, not perfection. Dr. Moelleken has helped thousands of women reshape their appearance through breast augmentation and during your initial consultation; together you can decide the optimal approach to best satisfy your desired outcome.

Are You An Ideal Candidate For Breast Augmentation?

Because of the increased safety and effectiveness of cosmetic surgery as well as the broadening social acceptance of breast augmentation, more people are choosing to have the procedure performed. Although breast implants continue to carry some stigma of danger, that fear is rapidly receding. Breast augmentation may be a good option for you if you have at least one the following conditions or traits:

  • You are in good general health.
  • You consider your breasts to be too small or under-developed.
  • You feel your figure and silhouette are out of proportion due to smaller breasts.
  • You feel limited when choosing clothes to accentuate your chest.
  • Your breasts have lost shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.
  • You lack confidence to wear more revealing clothing that may highlight your cleavage.
  • Your breasts may be uneven and asymmetrical.
  • One or both of your breasts failed to develop normally.
  • Your breast may be sagging due to a multitude of factors.
  • You currently have breast implants and are experiencing problems or dissatisfaction with them.

The Different Types Of Breast Implants

The safety and effectiveness of breast augmentation surgery has progressed significantly over the past few decades. Currently there are two types of breast implants approved by the FDA for safe use in augmentations: silicone gel and saline. Silicone gel implants are pre-filled, whereas saline is injected as part of the procedure and silicone. Gel implants look and feel much like your natural breast tissue both types offer a variety of sizes and shapes which is a popular aspect of the procedure. Some women request a teardrop shape, which more closely mimics the natural shape of your breast, while others prefer a more rounded look. Both silicone and saline implants come in either textured or smooth surfaces and in opaque or flesh-colored tones. The ultimate size of the breast is mainly a personal decision and cup size is not an exact estimate of what your final size will be because cup sizes vary with each bra manufacturer.

What To Expect

Breast augmentation is usually performed as an outpatient procedure and the surgery typically takes one to four hours. Using either local or general anesthesia, you will be medicated during your surgery so you will not experience any discomfort. Incisions are made in as inconspicuous an area as possible usually the armpit, around the areola (nipple area), or under the breast itself to minimize visible scarring. At your initial consultation, Dr. Moelleken will discuss the types of incisions available based on the size of your implant, your anatomy, and your preference.

The Procedure

During the breast augmentation procedure, Dr. Moelleken will lift your breast tissue and insert the implant. He will then center it beneath the nipple either under the breast (submammary) or under the breast and chest muscle (subpectoralunder. A sub-glandular placement does not involve the muscles of your chest as the insertion is beneath the breast tissue only and the fatty tissue within your breast gives your implants a more realistic feel. In the partial sub-glandular placement, the implant is inserted behind your breast tissue but the pectoral and chest muscles are involved to a degree. This procedure causes your breasts to feel and look natural and once your implants are placed, your incisions are closed using surgical tape, surgical glue, or sutures.

The Recovery Process & Risks

Depending on the extent of your surgery, most patients are able to return to work within a week post-operatively. After a recovery period of 24 to 48 hours, you may experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks. You should take any prescribed medications as this will help control the pain, manage your swelling, and avoid undue scarring. Wearing the proper supportive garments will also help you heal and you may find that sleeping in a reclined position will help any swelling subside more quickly. As with any surgery, there are risks. Breast augmentation complications are rare but include scarring, infection, bleeding, loss of sensation, and slow healing. You can minimize your chance for these problems by following the pre- and post-surgical instructions and guidelines provided by Dr. Moelleken and his professional staff.

Choosing The Right Size

The right size implant for your breast augmentation will leave you looking better as long as it fits your body’s physical proportions. Too small of an implant will not make enough of a difference in your appearance and a breast implant that is too large might be visible through your skin. This results in a less than natural feel and appearance and if the implants are too large, they can cause back pain and limit your athletic abilities.

Factors That Go Into Size Selection

A number of factors determine how much your breast should be enlarged. Women with large builds and large shoulders can typically receive larger breast implants than smaller women. Smaller implants can give petite women the impression of having larger breasts. Dr. Moelleken will help you determine what size of breasts will look best on your body. Your body size isn’t the only factor however as Dr. Moelleken will examine your breast tissue and skin. The amount of breast skin that you have and how elastic it is will play a role in determining your ideal breast implant size. The results of breast augmentation are long-lasting and usually permanent.
