Photorejuvenation Information

Photo Rejuvenation Introduction

As we continue to age, the popularity of aesthetic procedures designed to turn back the hands of time continues to skyrocket. Cosmetic flaws in skin pigment may be caused by heredity, reaction to medication, sun damage, pregnancy, lifestyle, and many other factors. Fallout results from photoaging are easy targets for laser systems that use broadband light to repair defects through a process called Photo Rejuvenation. Photo Rejuvenation is a series of Intense Pulsed Light treatments that improve the appearance of Rosacea, flushing, sun damaged skin, age spots, acne, skin texture, and photo aging. The treatment also improves mild acne scars, reduces large pores, corrects dark circles around your eyes and reduces fine lines. Similar to Microdermabrasion, the treatment involves little to no downtime so you can resume normal activities immediately.

Nearly 100% of us have one or more pigmented lesion. Regardless of the cause, pigmented lesions are simply spots on your skin where there is a higher concentration of melanin. Some lesions are flat while others are raised and in most cases, pigmented lesions are merely a cosmetic concern. In some instances however, pigmented lesions can be an early sign of skin cancer and that is far more serious. For most benign pigmented lesions that are of a cosmetic concern, Photo Rejuvenation is a non-surgical option. By exposing a pigmented lesion to short pulses of visible light, the temperature in the highly concentrated melanin can be raised sharply, enough to shatter the cells containing the melanin. Your body will then replace those cells with new cells generated by the surrounding, untreated area.

AFT Photofacial or Photo Rejuvenation (aka FotoFacial or photo facial) treatments center on the patented Advanced Florescent Pulsed Light system, which penetrates deep below your skin’s surface to help start the production of new collagen and other connective tissues. All Photofacial treatments are not the same however. The Alma Laser and new Harmony™ pulsed light system uses Advanced Fluorescence Technology (AFT) and represents the most advanced generation of pulsed light treatments. The unique shape of the AFT pulse limits peak power to only the therapeutic range, precisely heating the intended part of the skin with the limited risk of skin damage or discomfort. Each pulse delivers a predictable pulse and provides reproducible treatments that are safe and effective. There are many ways you can restore your skin’s youthful appearance but if you are looking for a highly effective method that does not require surgery, Photo Rejuvenation may be exactly what you need. At Neo Surgery Center, Dr. Moelleken offers premier results to his patients in Beverly Hills, Santa Barbara, and other California cities and beyond.

Photo Rejuvenation Technology

AFT is the next generation of intense pulsed light. It takes formerly unused short-wavelength light and converts it into part of the usable spectrum through a special filtering system. It increases emission and penetration for more effective treatments. AFT also delivers Equally Distributed Fluence, which means that every pulse has uniform energy density across the entire output face. This fluence ensures repeatable results and remarkable safety. AFT yields a more efficient system for ideal clinical improvements and the process leaves your skin rejuvenated and smooth, starting after your very first treatment. Because there is no removal of skin and no effect on the surface layer of skin, this is a no-downtime treatment. The light passes harmlessly through your skin and is absorbed by spots and lesions. The abnormal cells are destroyed, leaving only healthy tissue and a Photo Rejuvenation treatment also stimulates the growth of collagen, decreases pore size, and gives your skin a new, youthful appearance.

Photo Rejuvenation Procedure and Risks

The Photo Rejuvenation treatment is similar for most skin problems. This FDA approved technology delivers pulses of broad-spectrum light energy through a computer controlled hand piece. Your skin will be cleansed, prepared with gel, and treated with the light. With each flash of light, colored pigments are broken up to be small enough so that they will eventually disappear, as your body absorbs them. After your procedure, an antibiotic ointment or sunscreen will be applied to the treated areas. Several sessions over a period of weeks may be required to reach your desired results and during your initial consultation, Dr. Moelleken will develop a treatment plan designed specifically for you. Optimal results can be achieved in usually three to five treatments spaced as frequently as three weeks apart and each treatment may vary from 15 to 45 minutes.

Photo Rejuvenation is a safe, common and quick procedure with little risk. You may experience a sunburned look for a few hours after your treatment and targeted spots will temporarily appear darker and flake off within a couple of days. Hair growth will most likely be affected in the treatment site and will slow for a short period of time. Swelling, blistering, infection, unwanted pigmentation changes, and scarring are rare side effects. Specific settings are selected for each treatment area for optimal results and visible improvement is achieved with minimal risk. You may immediately return to your normal routine and even apply makeup however, the avoidance of sun exposure is strongly advised or permanent pigmentation changes may occur.
