Neo Surgery Center is proud to be a preferred provider for the recently FDA approved dermal filler, JUVEDERM®. As you age, your skin changes and over time, the natural volume of youthful skin begins to diminish allowing wrinkles and folds to form. Dr. Brent Moelleken, M.D., F.A.C.S., believes that with JUVEDERM® you do not have to just sit back and accept what is happening. Dr. Moelleken is a Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon with offices in Beverly Hills and Santa Barbara. He is double board certified by the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Plastic Surgery and specializes in cosmetic surgery. He received his premedical, medical, and surgical training at Harvard University, Yale University, UCSF, and UCLA. Dr. Moelleken is passionate about his practice, his techniques, and the well being and safety of every one of his patients.
Facial wrinkles and creases begin to appear in your lips and skin as the underlying collagen and elastin fibers begin to wear out. While this breakdown is part of the natural aging process, it can also result from excessive squinting, frowning, and smiling. In the past, the most frequently used material for filling facial wrinkles and frown lines was injectable collagen. Recently, hyaluronic acid has exploded on the scene as the longer-lasting, more natural filler preferred by physicians worldwide. Dr. Moelleken utilizes wrinkle filler injections for his patients and with JUVEDERM® a natural, cross-linked, non-animal hyaluronic acid filler developed using biosynthesis, he feels you can meet your goals without the fear of an allergic reaction.
JUVEDERM™, the “next-generation” in dermal fillers, is smoother, versatile, and more advanced than anything on the market today. From Allergan, the makers of Botox Cosmetic, in June of 2006 the FDA approved JUVEDERM™ as a filler for lines and wrinkles in the nasolabial folds (deep grooves or lines that extend from the corners of the nose down along the mouth). JUVEDERM® employs its unique manufacturing process to provide the highest concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid of any currently available hyaluronic acid dermal filler for long-lasting results. Dr. Moelleken performs all facial filler injections himself and this is important for several reasons. While injectable fillers are safe, they are medications that are injected into your body and if done incorrectly, complications can occur. Dr. Moelleken specializes in the anatomy being affected by the fillers and he has a keen understanding of the relationship of the various structures involved. Dr. Moelleken is committed to helping you meet your goals and he will do everything possible to help you attain your desired results. JUVEDERM® provides a soft, supple correction that gives you a youthful result so if you are ready to improve your appearance, call Neo Surgery Center today and schedule your private consultation with Dr. Moelleken.
Your skin consists of two layers: the epidermis and the dermis. The uppermost layer, the epidermis, serves as a protective layer and controls the loss of water from the cells and tissue that serves as a barrier to the external environment. Just below the epidermis is the dermis. The dermis contains the structural elements of the skin such as blood vessels, nerves, and hair follicles. Protein forms a network of fibers that provide a framework for the growth of cells and blood vessels and because this is the primary component of the dermis, collagen acts as a support for your skin giving it strength and elasticity. Over time, your skin ages and the thin epidermis loses its ability to serve as a barrier to retain water. Additionally, your production of collagen slows and your existing collagen becomes less effective. All dermal filers act as anti-aging products by reducing the effects of your thinning epidermis and ineffective collagen.
Hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in your skin, plays an important role in moisturizing your skin and helping to give it elasticity and tone. It is the fundamental matter in which the collagen fibers and elastin are immersed. It is a reduction in the natural hyaluronic acid in the skin over time that contributes most to aging skin. Hyaluronic acid is a basic element in connective skin tissue. It is also found in bodily fluids like spinal fluid and your eye’s aqueous humor. Hyaluronic acid has a hydrophilic quality, which means it has the ability to draw and hold water so it helps to nourish and moisturize your skin.
The success of hyaluronic acid depends on its natural source and its ability to attract water. Because it is natural, it integrates smoothly into your skin with a minimum of side effects and is harmlessly absorbed into your body over time. However, it gives long-lasting results because as some of the hyaluronic acid is absorbed, the remaining amount retains its volume by binding water. Since hyaluronic acid helps your body lock moisture in your dermis, this allows hyaluronic acid to give long-lasting results that remain nearly constant for the entire period.
Hyaluronic acid is not a new product. In addition to being used for aesthetic purposes, hyaluronic acid has been used for more than 20 years to help improve arthritic joints as well as for eye surgery and wound repair. Its long term effects have been well tested and documented. Hyaluronic acid naturally contains an anesthetic called lidocaine so there is no need for the use of topical or local anesthetic at the injection site. Additionally, there is a very low potential for allergic reaction because hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that exists in the human body. The beautiful results of your JUVEDERM® treatment should be apparent for up to a year, though touch-ups are usually necessary to maintain the results.
JUVEDERM® is an injectable filler that is biocompatible, supplementing your body’s natural hyaluronic acid that has depleted with age. JUVEDERM® is a smooth consistency gel that is softer and smoother than Restylane®. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers offer a safe and effective nonsurgical option for smoothing facial wrinkles and folds. In fact, they are the fastest growing nonsurgical aesthetic procedure in the United States according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery but all dermal fillers are not the same. Many dermal fillers use a gel particle suspension formulation and these gel particles can be visibly seen. JUVEDERM® is produced with the latest HYLACROSS technology however, resulting in a gel with many more cross-links. The smooth consistency of JUVEDERM® produces natural, even filling effects and since your body absorbs cross-linked hyaluronic acid more slowly, the results of JUVEDERM® last longer. JUVEDERM® injectable gel is the only filler available with a smooth consistency gel so patient discomfort is also minimized at the injection site.
Benefits of JUVEDERM®
If you are considering a dermal filler to improve your aging face, you should know the advantages of choosing JUVEDERM® injectable gel which include:
Your initial consultation gives you and Dr. Moelleken the opportunity to determine whether you are a good candidate for dermal fillers. After deciding you want to undergo the procedure, Dr. Moelleken will begin your JUVEDERM® treatment by cleaning the skin at the injection site and surrounding areas with an antiseptic. You will likely not need an anesthetic for your JUVEDERM® treatment, as the solution contains lidocaine, however some topical options may be available. The smooth consistency gel of JUVEDERM® allows Dr. Moelleken to administer it easily and smoothly and using a special technique, he will inject the JUVEDERM® solution into and below the dermis of your skin. When placed under your skin, the JUVEDERM® solution combines with the naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in your tissue, adding volume. Dr. Moelleken will gently massage the injection site immediately after treatment to ensure proper placement of the product. There is a slight possibility of a visible lumpiness in the treated area but this can usually be massaged away. More common is a mild redness, swelling, and possibly itching in the treated area that should go away the same day.
When you leave Dr. Moelleken’s office following your JUVEDERM® treatment, the injection site on your face may feel overly full or even tight but this will quickly dissipate. For the first 24 hours, Dr. Moelleken will ask that you avoid exercise, alcohol, and exposure to sun and heat as these may cause a reaction or itching at the treatment site and any swelling you experience may be alleviated with the application of an ice pack. Most treatments last approximately 15 minutes and results can be seen instantly. With immediate results, there is little to no downtime. One advantage to JUVEDERM® is its pliant gel consistency, which provides a smoother appearance than some of its more rigid predecessors. Maintaining your improved appearance with JUVEDERM® may last six to nine months and the benefits will last even longer if you have a follow-up treatment a few weeks after your first procedure.
The Common Areas JUVEDERM® Treats

Fillers can also be utilized for volume replacement bringing back a more youthful appearance to your aging face or hands or for volume enhancement by giving you more prominent cheek bones or fuller lips.
The most common areas where fillers are utilized include:
