For many women and men, unwanted hair is a nuisance and an extreme source of embarrassment. Today, laser hair removal is the fastest-growing most widely performed non-invasive aesthetics procedure in cosmetic dermatology. Women often choose to remove unwanted hair from their chins, upper lips, underarms, bikini line, and legs to eliminate the endless hours of shaving or waxing. For men, laser hair removal has become a popular solution for excessive hair, on their face, parts of the neck, back, and chest. Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses laser light: an intense, pulsating beam of light to remove unwanted hair. Laser hair removal works by passing a light beam through your skin and targeting dark pigment, called melanin. When the light beam hits the hair follicle where the hair growth originates, the intense heat destroys the hair follicle instantly.
Until recently, laser hair removal was an uncomfortable, time-consuming, and expensive experience with an inconsistent outcome at best. Photoepilation, or ‘hair removal using light,’ has shown dramatic gains in popularity over the past several years. Advances in laser technology have resulted in far better results and today; laser hair removal treatments are safer, faster, and more comfortable than ever before. One of the major contributors to this remarkable change comes from The Harmony Family: the world’s most versatile and expandable platform for aesthetic lasers and light treatments. This revolutionary procedure permanently removes body hair in a virtually painless manner. The Harmony’s modular design provides multiple distinct cosmetic solutions all built into one compact unit. The New Harmony® XL is built on the success of the Alma lasers’ flagship Harmony®, which is a multi-application platform and the world’s most sophisticated, expandable system for aesthetic laser and light treatments. Harmony® XL includes all of the technologies of Harmony plus a virtual Hair Removal module (SHR) which Dr. Brent Moelleken M. D., F.A.C.S., is proud to offer at his Neo Surgery Centers located in Beverly Hills and Santa Barbara, California. Harmony® XL includes AlmaLasers’ unique and revolutionary Super Hair Removal SHR technology that launches a new era in hair removal-virtually painless hair removal. The SHR mode is a revolutionary new approach for improved effectiveness and comfortable hair removal, dramatically changing the way hair removal has been performed for the past 15 years.

When it comes to laser hair removal systems, there are more choices available than almost any other kind of cosmetic laser. There are literally dozens of specialized systems that are designed specifically for laser hair removal and the treatments can vary dramatically. Older hair removal technology sends massive amounts of heat into your skin, essentially killing the hair follicle in a fiery blast. Fortunately, laser hair removal has entered into the 21st Century with the advent of the Harmony® XL SHR Laser Hair Removal system from Alma Laser. Laser and light based hair removal systems have been characterized as slow and painful but the Harmony® XL Laser yields permanent hair reduction and long-term hair removal anywhere on your face or body quickly and without discomfort.
Alma Lasers is different from other laser companies and they are proud of that difference. Because the demand for laser hair removal is vast, they did not want to create an ordinary hair removal laser. With that mission in mind, they created the Harmony XL SHR laser hair removal system. Patients that have experienced laser hair removal with another laser understand the difference, as traditional hair removal systems were painful enough to produce tears. Alma Lasers changed laser hair removal forever but they want you to know that older, painful lasers are still out there so you need to research before you decide where to have your laser hair removal treatment.
The SHR mode consists of high average power, high repetition rate pulsing and in motion technique. Skipped spots are eliminated with the in-motion technique of this 780-950 nm Near Infra Red beam. The temperature of both the hair follicle and the surrounding tissue is increased.
The Harmony SHR procedure makes use of NIR (near-Infrared light) to get rid of unwanted hair on the face and body. Harmony® XL SHR Laser Hair Removal utilizes the most effective wavelength for treating unwanted hair for men and women of all skin tones and hair types. The advanced Continuous Wave (CW) technology makes treatments more effective by allowing extra energy to be delivered in the optimal therapeutic range while eliminating the dangerous energy spikes that can cause burning and other undesirable side effects.
The Harmony XL SHR laser works by a principle called Selective Photothermolysis. The laser is pulsed (turned on) for a millisecond emitting a beam of light on to your skin and the light energy passes harmlessly through your skin but is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and hair shaft. By absorbing this laser energy, the hair follicles are disabled, impairing their ability to grow. The laser is only effective on hair follicles in the active growth phase (anagen), eliminating undesired hair from all parts of the body.
Harmony XL SHR breaks the mold of previous laser hair removal systems because of the system’s unique IN-Motion™ technology, along with the sweeping motion of the laser that safely and gently heats the targeted area under your skin while you stay comfortable. The rapid pulsing capabilities of the system are enabled by the system’s high average peak power: another unique factor in the industry. This rapid pulsing makes possible a key aspect of virtually painless hair removal or “hair removal in motion”. The Harmony® XL includes both the SHR (Super Hair Removal) mode for “in-motion” hair removal and the HR mode, which is a conventional diode laser mode. Alma Lasers explains that the SHR mode utilizes a series of low fluence, high repetition pulses to increase the temperature of both the hair follicle and the surrounding, nourishing tissue to 45 degrees C. This more gradual, in-motion heat delivery uses the chromophores in the surrounding tissue as reservoirs to effectively heat up the hair follicle. This, along with the heat energy absorbed directly by the hair follicle, damages the follicle and prevents re-growth. The SHR mode protects your epidermis and provides a virtually painless treatment and the SHR mode is suitable for all skin and hair types.
Laser hair removal is the non-invasive reduction of unwanted facial and body hair with the assistance of a laser or intense pulsed light source. The Harmony XL SHR meets all the requirements for versatility and reliability for medical and aesthetic treatments. The great number of exchangeable applicators enables Dr. Moelleken to treat numerous clinical indications with excellent results. Modern technology guarantees the usage of high fluences even under difficult conditions and the technical components are integrated into the Handpiece, which reduces system malfunctions or maintenance. The Harmony device is the most comprehensive and versatile platform for the medical and aesthetic market and its functionality and flexibility are unsurpassed.
Laser hair removal works on just about any area of the body where smooth skin is desired. This includes under your arms, face, neck, back, legs, shoulders, and bikini line. Harmony XL with SHR is the state of the art procedure specially designed to remove unwanted with fewer visits than ever before. Now because of the patented technology, even sensitive areas can be treated without the discomfort other systems are noted for. Because Dr. Moelleken uses a sweeping, paintbrush technique, the procedure is shorter, more comfortable, and gives better results.
To summarize, some of the benefits of the Harmony XL SHR include:
Lasers only treat hairs that are in their active growth phase and the number of active follicles and their cycle time will vary with each area of your body. Follicles that are in a dormant phase (at least two-thirds) are not affected. Additional treatments are performed as hairs that were dormant become active and begin to grow so the number of sessions will vary with each patient and body area. It’s important to realize that laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment inside the hair follicle without damaging delicate pores and the structures of your skin. Because hair cycles through “growth” and “dormant” phases, during the “dormant” phase the follicle has no pigment so usually at least two or three treatments will be needed.
There is no way to predict exactly how many treatments you will need but the average is:
