The surgery for a breast augmentation with lift procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and most patients heal very quickly. Normally you will be able to return to your usual routine within one week after your procedure but you will be instructed not to lift anything over 10 pounds for the first two weeks following your procedure and nothing over 20 pounds for four weeks following that. Since breast augmentation with lift surgeries are performed in a variety of ways, each patient’s recovery will vary.
Whether you should have your breast augmentation in combination with a breast lift depends on your ultimate goals. The best techniques for your ideal outcome of breast surgery will depend on your body and breast type and the entire procedure for a breast lift with breast implants takes an average of one hour. Breast lift surgery is an effective way to achieve a fuller look; however choosing to have a breast lift without an augmentation usually reduces your size by approximately one-cup size. This reduction in size with a breast lift is usually combined with breast implants to increase the size at the same time the lift is performed. Research has confirmed that there is no increase in the risk of complications as the down time for a breast lift with implants is no more than if either procedure was performed alone.
Augmentation mastopexy increases breast volume, restores the position of your nipple-areola complex to the top of your breast mound, tightens the lower pole, and lifts your breast. The physical changes brought about by enjoying the breasts you have always dreamed of having are rewarding but how you feel about your body image is the most important change of all. Positive emotional transformations are truly satisfying and many of Dr. Moelleken’s patients have trouble expressing the words of thanks they feel for the incredible changes he has made in their lives.

Over time, both your nipple and your breast mound may descend on your chest wall producing a drooping (ptotic) appearance. It is normal, like the rest of your body, for your breasts to sag as you grow older and the sagging (ptosis) is exacerbated by childbirth, genetics, weight gain, and weight loss. Breast skin and ligaments that hold your breast to the muscle beneath becomes stretched and weaker and when the breast tissue decreases, your skin gets loose. Occasionally, the sagging of your nipple and areola is accompanied by loss of breast volume. In the cases of nipple sagging and volume loss, a combination of a breast lift (mastopexy) with the placement of an implant (augmentation) ensures the most successful aesthetic outcome. This procedure is called a breast augmentation with lift or an augmentation-mastopexy.
If you have sagging breasts and a loss of fullness in the upper portion of your breasts, you are a good candidate for a breast augmentation with lift procedure. There are two ways to correct this problem and Dr. Moelleken is an experienced breast surgeon who will explain your options fully after your consultation and examination. To address the issue of loss of volume and fullness in your breasts, a breast augmentation is often recommended at the same time as the lift because the implant fills up the extra skin of your breast. It is difficult to achieve significant fullness in the upper poles of your breasts (the upper aspect of the breasts, above the nipple-areola area) by means of a breast lift alone and the appearance of fullness in the upper part of your breasts creates a significantly more natural–looking breast profile.
In some cases with a slight sagging of the breasts, an implant alone may lift your breast enough. In more severe sagging cases however, the implant is placed beneath your pectoral muscle and the breast lift is then performed. Placing implants behind breasts with significant ptosis creates the appearance of breasts just hanging from a pair of implants, which looks distinctly unnatural and aesthetically unappealing. The shape of the breast mound is better when both a breast augmentation and a breast lift are performed together. Although breast lift surgery will raise the gland and nipple, the overall effect on the shape of your breast is a flattening appearance. The placement of an implant will fill out your breast and improve projection but since the average breast implant weighs approximately 12oz., this additional weight may accelerate the rate of ongoing breast ptosis if the implant is not combined with a lift. When a breast lift and augmentation are performed at the same time, less skin has to be removed resulting in less scarring as well.
Combining a breast lift with an augmentation saves one surgery. It is a more complex procedure if both augmentation and a lift are done at the same time, so doctor experience is very important.
There is a higher chance of needing a touch-up if the surgeries are combined, but if the patient has 2 separate procedures, there is a 100% chance of needing a second operation!
It is risky to do too big an augmentation along with a breast lift, because this can endanger the blood supply of the breast.
If it is carefully done, there is no extra risk of scarring or increased downtime.
Ladies who have had children often tell me they feel like they nave ‘socks in rocks’ after breast feeding their children. It can be a wonderful procedure to restore fullness in the breasts and lift them at the same time.
It is more cost effective to combine surgeries when it is safe,. There is only need for one anesthetic, one trip to the operating room, and one recovery time.
Every breast procedure is different, from augmentations, to lifts, to combined procedures, to removal and replacement of implants, reconstructions after cancer. Combined breast augmentation and lift typically produces very nice results and patients tend to be quite happy and less self-conscious.
