The first goal with skin cancers is to remove them so the chance they recur is minimal. This is done with careful surgery and an experienced pathologist.
The second goal is to reconstruct the area where the tumor was as skillfully and artistically as possible. It is realistic with many small cancers to have minimal or no sign the tumor was there. With larger cancers or cancers in sensitive areas, the challenges increase. Often the difference between a well and poorly designed surgery is having or not having a permanent deformity.
Early detection is vital; self-exams as well as yearly visits to a skilled and patient dermatologist for a head-to-toe mole check are a must.
