Laser is a very exciting new technique in facial rejuvenation. The laser is a tool that can be used for resurfacing or cutting. When used around the eyes while the fat is removed, this is termed a laser blepharoplasty. Laser surgery removes the recycling layer of the skin (epidermis) and a portion of the permanent layer (dermis), the layer where small skin cancers, warts, precancers and sun spots start to set up shop. To be used safely, the laser must be customized to the skin type of the patient; no single setting is applicable for all patients.
Dr. Moelleken's plastic surgery training and two year experience in the wound healing laboratory and numerous wound healing chapters and publications (RESUME) make him very aware of the potential-- and the risks-- of the laser. When properly performed with the newest type of laser, the risk of the laser causing scarring, permanent hyperpigmentation, and longstanding redness in a properly prepared patient is very low. The laser can cause some lightening of the skin, both as a result of the laser itself and of removing the pigmented lesions that give overall color to the skin. The degree of hypopigmentation for laser seems to be much lower than that seen with the older types of phenol-based peels.
Recovery is about two weeks for the laser, one week of healing phase and a second week of pink-red skin. After that, the patient is back in makeup and enjoying his or her new skin. Usually after six weeks, the patient no longer requires any makeup. The length of healing time varies from patient to patient. It is very important to adhere strictly to the after instructions!
Laser is an exciting technique and offers surgery without incisions, an attractive and economical alternative to larger surgeries for many patients.
